When you arrive
in Cairo, the county seat of
Grady County, you will notice
tidy neighborhoods, clean
streets, and a thriving downtown
district anchored by the $2.5
million Grady County courthouse.
The sense of
security you feel is genuine,
backed up by efficient fire and
police departments, progressive
healthcare professionals, and
caring government officials.
Grady County
There are more
than 130 county employees and
elected officials. The county
government is managed by five
elected commissioners chosen by
the district. The commissioners
elect a chairman each year and
appoint a county administrator.
County police
protection is enforced by one
elected sheriff, eleven sworn
deputies, two office personnel,
eleven jailers, and thirteen
patrol cars.
Fire protection
in the county is provided by a
150-member all-volunteer fire
department.

The City of Cairo
is managed by a five-member city
council elected by districts; a
mayor elected at-large; and a
city manager appointed by the
mayor and council.
The city fire
department includes 17 full-time
department personnel, supported
by a 15-member volunteer force
and has a Class 4 rating.

Whigham City Government
Seven miles west
of Cairo is Whigham, the only
other incorporated city in Grady
County. Whigham’s city
government has one mayor and
five city council members, all
elected at-large. Whigham also
provides garbage pickup, police
and fire protection, electricity
and water for city residents.

Education
With a
professional staff of 354 and an
outstanding teacher-pupil ratio,
the 4,581 students enrolled in
the Grady County School System
can expect a first-rate
educational experience at any
level.
There are five
elementary schools, one middle
school, and Cairo High School,
home of the Syrupmakers. The
Syrupmakers have long been
considered a perennial power in
the classroom and on the
athletic field as well.
Grady County puts
an emphasis on parental and
community involvement. High-tech
computers and automated media
centers give the students
hands-on experience.
As students
evolve with personal skills,
they may be directed to a
college preparatory curriculum
with an emphasis on math and
science skills, or toward the
Tech-Prep program, preparing
them for the business world.
Careers awareness and
exploration ideas are
effectively presented at the
upper school level.

Bainbridge
College’s link with Grady County
is extremely close since it is a
mere 20 miles from Cairo.
Hundreds of leaders in Grady

Southwest Georgia Technical College
Making a major
contribution toward training the
area labor force is Southwest
Georgia Technical College in
Thomasville. Providing a
variety of diploma, certificate,
and associate degrees, the
college also works directly with
Grady County in cooperation with
the State of Georgia’s
innovative “Quick Start”
program. This program is geared
to training new or expanding
firms in Grady County. The
Technical College also maintains
extensive adult literacy and
Continuing Education Services.

Florida State
University is a public
co-educational institution. The
college has seventeen major
academic divisions with courses
of study in 26 major
disciplines. In addition to the

Tallahassee Community College
Tallahassee
Community College opened in 1966
to serve the post-high school
educational needs of students
from Leon, Wakulla and Gadsden
counties in Florida although

college education as well as a
wide variety of enrichment

Valdosta State University

opened in 1960, continues to
undergo renovations and upgrades

state-of-the-art treatment and

hospital offers sophisticated CT

The expanded birthing center
features four labor/ delivery /
recovery / postpartum suites,
providing for better continuity
of care. The coronary care unit
is equipped with the latest
Space Lab patient monitoring
system.
Grady General Hospital is fully
accredited by the
Joint Commission of Healthcare
Organizations. As an
affiliate of
John D. Archbold Memorial
Hospital in Thomasville,
Grady General is a part of the
statewide telemedicine network
based at the Medical College of
Georgia, which further allows
